India beat New Zealand, but their quarterfinal ticket hangs on Oman vs Bahrain

India closed Pool B in third place with a 1-2 record. Their quarterfinal place depends on Oman versus Bahrain in Pool A. If Oman wins a full three points, they overtake India. If Bahrain beats Oman 3-0, the two sides are separated by point ratio. In every other scenario, India go through.

A team can win its last match in straight sets and still be eliminated by a result in another pool. This year's championship doubles as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and a pathway to the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup, so every pool point carries the weight of a final.

Jerome's 19 points and the structure behind them

Jerome Vinith Charles scored 19 points, a match high, adding two kill blocks. Outside hitter Chirag Yadav contributed 14 points with three aces and a block. The other outside, Amit Balwan Singh, added 13 points and two blocks. India's three main attackers combined for 46 points, more than two-thirds of the team total.

That distribution says something more important than the feeling of one man carrying a team: India could attack from both wings and from the opposite position, meaning their setting was reliable enough not to depend on a single outlet.

Opposite Yuji Nishida scored 16 points, a match high, at an 82 percent attack success rate. Outside hitter Ran Takahashi had five aces, a 70 percent kill rate and 13 points.

Those rates need to be read slowly. An 82 percent attack rate is not Nishida's achievement alone: stable reception delivers the ball to the setter in an ideal position, the setter places it on rhythm, and the opposing block is stretched by other attackers. A hitter only reaches 82 percent when the three people around him do their jobs.

A team cannot win on talent alone; it wins by trusting each other.

Australia finish second in Pool A at 2-1; outside William D'Arcy-Miles led them with 13 points, Lorenzo Pope added 11. In Pool C, Korea swept Qatar 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 to finish 2-1 with seven points. Qatar's opposite Mubarak Musa Thiik Madut scored 17 points, a match high, while Korea's outside Jaeyoung Lim led his team with 15.

The counter-view: when a win is not yours

There is a reading rarely mentioned: India won but do not control their own fate, while Japan won 3-0 in a match that changed nothing, because they were already through.

Tournaments with multiple pools work against the usual image: most qualifying places are decided by matches your team is not in. India's fans tonight must cheer for a team they have no connection to, hoping the result falls in the right box.

The fault does not lie with the format; it is the nature of a system in which every result is linked. It forces an unromantic admission: a straight-sets win may not be enough, and a straight-sets defeat in another pool may be a favour.
