McLaren to bring rotating rear wing H-Wing to Monza, expects breakthrough at Italian GP
McLaren is preparing a highly ambitious technical step for the upcoming Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Woking-based team has confirmed it will equip its new rotating rear wing, called the H-Wing, on both cars at the Monza circuit. This is one of the most notable aerodynamic innovations of the 2026 season, as the new regulations allow movable aerodynamic components in defined modes.
The H-Wing, independently developed by McLaren after observing rival Ferrari testing a similar concept during winter testing, can rotate 180 degrees between two modes: cornering mode and straight-line mode. In cornering mode, the wing generates maximum downforce for grip; when switching to straight-line mode, the wing rotates to reduce drag, allowing higher top speed. The concept is similar to Ferrari's Macarena wing, but McLaren insists it is an independent design, not a copy.
Neil Houldey, McLaren's technical director, said: 'The H-Wing is part of what we believe is needed to be competitive. We have observed the rivals and developed our own solution. Monza is the first opportunity to bring it to the race.' Houldey also revealed that the team will evaluate the wing's performance during Friday and Saturday practice sessions before deciding whether to use it for qualifying.
The development of the H-Wing was not smooth. McLaren tested a prototype in Austria, but encountered a technical issue in the garage, forcing the team to withdraw and revise. Subsequently, a revised version was successfully run during the first practice session in Hungary, where the team collected crucial data to prepare for high-speed circuits. Monza, with its long straights and low-speed corners, is the ideal venue to test the H-Wing's drag reduction capability.
The decision to equip the H-Wing on both cars is a bold move. It shows McLaren's confidence in the wing's reliability after resolving the Austrian issue. However, it also means the team accepts double the risk if the wing underperforms or malfunctions during the race. Houldey acknowledged: 'We have a small aerodynamic package and other low-drag options. We will evaluate before making the final decision for qualifying.' This indicates McLaren still has a conventional low-drag wing as a fallback.
The strategic significance of the H-Wing at Monza is immense. Monza requires the highest top speed on the calendar, and any drag reduction advantage can translate into lap time gains. The H-Wing allows McLaren to maintain downforce at corners like Lesmo and Parabolica while reducing drag on the long straights, offering an optimal combination. If successful, it could be a powerful weapon for McLaren to compete with Ferrari, which pioneered the rotating wing concept early in the season.
The competitive landscape of the 2026 season is fierce. McLaren enters the season as defending constructors' champion, but Ferrari quickly seized the opportunity from the new active aero regulations to gain an advantage. The H-Wing is McLaren's response to close the gap. However, developing a new wing consumes significant resources from the cost cap and aerodynamic testing restrictions. Other teams like Red Bull and Mercedes may also be developing similar concepts, creating a multi-way technical race.
Regulation-wise, the H-Wing sits in a grey area but has precedent from Ferrari. Ferrari has run the Macarena wing since winter testing without compliance issues, so McLaren can rely on that precedent. However, McLaren's 180-degree rotation version may differ, and the FIA could issue a technical directive after Monza if it finds non-compliance. McLaren is betting that its design stays within the permitted limits of the new regulations.
The name H-Wing is not random. McLaren has a tradition of naming technical innovations, such as the F-duct in 2026. The H-Wing is said to echo the F-duct, a controversial but highly effective aerodynamic innovation. The team insists it is an internal name and is not related to Star Wars. This shows McLaren wants to create a brand narrative of continuous innovation.
The risks of the H-Wing are significant. Only one practice session in Hungary was conducted before the Monza debut, where high speeds and heavy braking could expose any weaknesses. The Austrian issue suggests the rotating mechanism may have reliability problems. If the wing jams in an incorrect mode, the consequences could be severe. McLaren has addressed the issue, but there is no long-term track data to confirm it.
Despite the risks, McLaren is optimistic. Houldey added: 'We have more performance to unlock from the MCL40. Further upgrades are planned for the races ahead.' This suggests the H-Wing is only part of McLaren's broader development plan for the 2026 season. If successful at Monza, it could pave the way for further improved versions.
In summary, the H-Wing is a bold move by McLaren in the technical race of modern F1. Monza will be the first real test for the 180-degree rotating wing concept. Whether it succeeds or fails, it proves that McLaren remains a team unafraid to innovate and willing to take risks for competitive advantage. Fans will be watching every lap at Monza to see if the H-Wing is truly the key to McLaren defending its crown.
