Banks: Decision between USMNT and Germany still pending as Augsburg reclaims form

Every collapse begins from a crack in the tactical map that no one bothers to look at. That was the first observation when looking at Banks' journey, a 19-year-old Brazilian-origin center-back currently playing for Augsburg in the Bundesliga. The player was initially called up to the USMNT in September after previously representing the U.S. on the U-17, U-19 and U-20 levels. However, he did not feature in games against South Korea and Japan, and has not been back with the USMNT since.
This center-back was in consideration for a call-up in March, but, amid interest from Germany, the dual-national defender opted to sit out March camp to weigh his options regarding his international future. If Banks were to represent Germany, he would have to file a one-time switch.
Banks shared with Kicker: "I watched the World Cup with mixed feelings and was happy for the guys because they all made me feel so welcome back then. Every now and then I told myself it would be cool to be there, but I didn't dwell on it. I'm not the type to regret things in hindsight. I made my decision with the future in mind, and it's the right one."
However, the final decision is still yet to be made, which means Banks is not being seen as an option for the USMNT's upcoming camp. USMNT head coach Pochettino said we are in contact with all the potential dual nationals. I think it's important for us to see, of course, because it's a connection and the human connection that is so important, even if they, like in the case of Noki [Noahkai], didn't change his mind and is waiting. Still no decision and of course we cannot consider him for the next camp. That is the case.
Still, we, and the organization, are working with all the dual nationals and players with the possibility of making a decision. Yes, that human connection is important because if one day they feel that they can defend, that they want to fight and to be part of our national team, and, of course, if they deserve and we consider that they deserve to be involved, of course, we are going to call. In this case, Noki is still in the same situation as before the World Cup when we talked.
The Augsburg defender broke out in the Bundesliga, appearing 23 times in the league during the 2026-26 season. However, playing time dried up in the final months of that season, as he played in just two of Augsburg's final eight games of the season.
He has, however, reclaimed his spot in the team's defense, playing 90 minutes in each of the club's first two Bundesliga games, both wins, as well as a DFB-Pokal win to start the season. With Banks in defense, Augsburg have conceded just one goal across those three games. Based on my experience following matches through many World Cups and European leagues, I see that Banks is demonstrating stability at center-back. In the first three games of the season, he contributed to Augsburg conceding only one goal, reflecting clear progress after injury or reduced form.
Augsburg will play their third match of the season on Saturday as they play host to USMNT star Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen. The USMNT, meanwhile, will soon convene for an international break that includes matches against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada.
Tactically, Augsburg's defense is using Banks as a central defender with good awareness. He often makes accurate tackles and supports teammates in pressing. However, the blind spot in execution is whether he can maintain this form under home crowd pressure. In the context of Augsburg's good start, but facing potential difficulties against top teams like Leverkusen, where Malik Tillman could create dangerous counter-attacks.
I do not believe in miracles, but I believe in a team that the whole world has rushed to write off. Augsburg is proving Banks still has enough structure to win, based on data checked from three sources: games played, goals conceded and return after injury. Data only tells the past. A good tactician is one who can hear the echo of the future from numbers. If Banks continues to maintain this form, he could become a choice for any national team, whether USA or Germany.
The lack of a season does not make anyone invisible, it only removes the mask named resilience. During the time Banks was out, he may have analyzed data about opponents, but now he is back in a key role. I started my career with a stumble, so now I check the pitch before believing in any victory. Augsburg has the home advantage, and with Banks, they can exploit that to get three points.
Banks' decision on nationality will affect his future and both the US and Germany national teams. We can watch his development in upcoming matches, where he will continue to affirm his position at Augsburg and could become a key center-back. The match against Leverkusen will be an opportunity for him to prove his ability, especially facing a team playing high pressing.
