Milton Keynes Ladies Charity Table Tennis Tournament Raises Over £650 for Breast Cancer Now

On a Saturday morning at the Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre, 14 amateur female athletes came together to deliver a meaningful message of compassion. They were not only playing to win but also raising funds for breast cancer patients and fostering the spirit of community sport. On September 6, the centre held its second annual women's charity tournament. The event was organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of the centre. With 14 women taking part, most of them from the centre's monthly ladies-only sessions. Unlike professional tournaments, this year's event emphasised the values of “fun and fair play”. The organiser designed a format with two group rounds, followed by a main draw and a consolation final. This gave all the women – from beginners to more experienced players – a chance to compete fairly in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. A unique aspect was the bra collection campaign. More than 100 bras were donated and sent to the Against Breast Cancer organisation for recycling. This helped protect the environment and raised funds for patient support and breast cancer research. The total monetary donations reached £650, handed to Breast Cancer Now. The event also promoted the centre's regular women's table tennis sessions, held every month as a healthy playground for local women. The next session is scheduled for November 1 from 10 am to 12 noon. The organiser has kept the Just Giving page open for those who wish to contribute further. This tournament clearly demonstrates that sports, especially table tennis, can act as a solid bridge to build community and spread humanitarian values. Despite its small scale, the event's success reveals the potential of grassroots sports in raising social awareness. The story from Milton Keynes could serve as an inspiration for other sports centres worldwide, including in Vietnam, to use sports as a tool for love and solidarity rather than only focusing on competitive achievements.
